Homelessness 101

About this Training:

To have the best chance in providing poignant and effective support to people experiencing homelessness, one must first have a clear understanding of homelessness. Many individuals have a perspective about homelessness that is not necessarily grounded in essential truths. Many people base their understanding of homelessness purely on what they see, without digging more deeply into the actual causes and reasons people experiencing homelessness are in the situations they are in. This results in myths and misunderstandings as well as unhealthy and unhelpful attitudes about people experiencing homelessness and how homelessness should be handled in our communities.

Yes, homelessness is not a pretty sight. Communities struggle with what to do about it and often have conflicted values related to it. On one hand, we don’t want to see people suffer, but on the other, we tend to think that people experiencing homelessness are simply not doing what’s needed to exit this situation and being an unnecessary burden on society by not making the choices that would resolve their experience.
