The Working Mind

About this Training:

Stigma is a major barrier preventing people from seeking help for mental health problems or mental illness. The fear of stigma often delays diagnosis and treatment. If identified and treated early, mental health concerns can be temporary and reversible. Employees who understand normal reactions to stress and how to manage these reactions are more resilient. They have the ability to recover from stress, traumatic events, and adverse situations. It is possible to train people to recognize changes in their own mental health and become more resilient. By reducing stigma and discrimination,  The Working Mind (TWM) training helps organizations create a culture that fosters greater awareness and support for mental health among employees, managers, and employers.

TWM training caters to both employees and managers. TWM for employees offers easily applied scenario-based lessons, videos that feature people with lived experience of mental illness, reference guides, and practical handouts and offers practical knowledge to increase participants’

overall comfort level with mental illness.

Managers, supervisors, and team leads have a special role in any organization. Building on TWM for employees, the TWM managers training gives participants the practical knowledge they need to ensure the workplace climate is conducive to support employees’ mental health and well-being.

TWM is part of the Opening Minds initiative, managed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). Launched by MHCC in 2013, TWM was developed by clinicians and peers based on scientific research and best-practices. It has been adapted to fit the general workplace audience and was developed with help from the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, Husky Energy, Nova Scotia Community College, Government of Nova Scotia, and Capital District Health (NS/Halifax).

The TTA has engaged in a unique partnership with MHCC and Opening Minds where our team has been trained as trainers and has been given special permission to deliver the program to organizations providing direct service in the homelessness serving sector. Their typical train-the-trainer model allows for training only within one’s own organization.

We will provide this training based on organizational requests in both in-person and virtual formats as well as open training virtually.
