Team Lead Boot Camp

About this Training:

As a team lead, you play a critical role in ensuring the successful implementation of Housing First programs. The Housing First Team Lead is responsible for overseeing and managing a team of professionals dedicated to implementing the Housing First approach. This role involves supervising team members, coordinating service delivery, ensuring program goals are met, and working collaboratively with community partners to address homelessness and housing instability. In general, a team lead is a manager who oversees a group of case managers who have the common goal of supporting people experiencing homelessness as they move from chronic homelessness to being housed and live in a more stable permanent environment. The role involves guiding and encouraging team members, which can help separate work into more manageable and efficient chunks.

This training is appropriate for:

  • Current and aspiring Housing First team leads
  • Program managers overseeing Housing Fist initiatives
  • Potentially – Social workers and case managers
  • Potentially – Community service providers
  • Potentially – Municipal staff involved in homelessness prevention and intervention

Training can be tailored according to attendees and the community or system involved.

Note – The TTA requests that all training include at a minimum, one member of leadership from each organization/agency represented, be present as a learner.

Training Objectives:

In this training, participants will: 

  • Be equipped with essential skills and knowledge to effectively lead a Housing First team
  • Understand Housing First and its role in ending homelessness
  • Be able to manage a Housing First team in fidelity to core principles
  • Learn to work in a person-centred supportive manner and mentor team members
  • Be able to improve the outcomes of their program due to enhanced skills and information

Certificate of Completion:

Through the TTA LMs, attendees will have the ability to receive a certificate of completion for the training .

Attendees must be present for the full training to do so.

To receive a certificate, attendees must complete and pass a  final knowledge check/assessment (within 30 days post training).

  1. 70% is required to pass.
  2. Each person will have unlimited attempts.

The Team Lead Boot Camp equips individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively lead and manage Housing First teams. This training focuses on key areas that empower team leads to create a supportive and efficient environment for their teams which fosters greater outcomes. 

Some key training topics include:

    • Understanding the Core of the Housing First approach: (This section is necessary if the attendees have not participated in a full Housing First training already). Explore the principles and values of the Housing First approach – understand the role of Housing First in ending homelessness – learn about the importance of immediate access to housing. 
    • Leadership and Supervision: Reviewing the key leadership skills to effectively guide a team including effectively managing caseloads – understanding the responsibilities of a team lead in the housing and homelessness sector – how to foster a positive team culture focused on person-centred care and support.
    • Collaboration and Communication: Partnerships with other service providers, community partners, and landlords – communication skills necessary to facilitate effective interactions within the team and with external stakeholders. 
    • Landlord Engagement: (if attendees have not participated in Landlord Engagement training). Understanding the critical role of landlords in Housing First – explore strategies for building and maintaining positive relationships with landlords – how to address landlord concerns. 
    • Problem-Solving and Conflict Resolution: Learn techniques for handling challenges related to participant interactions, team dynamics, or landlord relationships – learn to promote a problem solving mindset within the team. 
    • Cultural Competence and Diversity: Recognize the importance of cultural competence in serving diverse populations – understand the unique needs of different communities and for tailoring services accordingly.
    • Monitoring and Quality Assurance: How to monitor program outcomes and track progress – learn to implement quality assurance measures to ensure program effectiveness.
